Battery Recycling

Did You Know? Typical household batteries can be thrown in your normal trash can, but that doesn’t make it environmentally responsible.

Batteries that are thrown away instead of being recycled end up either in a landfill or burned in an incinerator. Landfilled batteries will eventually leach their chemicals into the surrounding groundwater, and burned batteries release their chemicals into the air. Why not send them to a facility that will properly handle and recycle their component materials? We at BZWI accept many different types of batteries for our Big Green Box collection — free to you! This program does cost our organization money, however, so a small donation with your battery drop-off is much appreciated.

Big Green Box also accepts small electronic devices and accessories for recycling. View the links below to learn which batteries and other materials are accepted in this program. When you are ready to drop your items off, send us a quick email or call our office to make sure we will be open!

BZWI has recycled over

800 lbs

of batteries to date!

Clothing and Textiles Recycling

A waste win! Massachusetts has recently updated waste disposal laws, and textiles are now banned from disposal in the state! This is great news for getting us on the path for responsibly managing our waste, but it does mean a little more work for you as a consumer, and that’s where BZWI comes in. We now have textile collection bins located right at our office site, which you can access anytime for drop-offs, even when we aren’t here.

Check below for a list of accepted items you should bring to the bins at BEAT, and feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. You can also learn more about the impact of textiles and the MA waste ban here.

Terracycle

Terracycle is a unique recycling business that takes hard-to-recycle products and turns them into reusable products, such as the water can pictured here. Terracycle offers opportunities for the funding of charitable organizations based on the weight of materials recycled. The more that BZWI is able to send in for recycling, the more we may be able to receive back in donation, which allows us to continue our zero waste programs and offer more solutions like these to our community!

Together we have recycled

10.85 lbs

of hard-to-recycle materials!

If you have any questions about what items are accepted in specific programs, or you know of a Terracycle program that you’d like us to start collecting, feel free to reach out with an email!
